Hammer Mill Blade Selection — Type A, B and C by Feedstock
A hammer mill blade is a free‑swing hammer: it pivots on its mounting pin and swings outward under centrifugal force to impact and shatter feedstock. Blade choice is a feedstock decision, not a price decision — the wrong type costs you either wear life or throughput, and both are more expensive than the blades.
Choosing blade type by feedstock
| Type |
Feedstock |
Trade‑off |
| Type A |
Softwood, sawdust, pine, spruce, fir |
Balances impact mass against wear resistance for softer material |
| Type B |
Hardwood, rice husk, abrasive feedstock |
Higher wear‑resistance steel; slightly lower impact mass |
| Type C |
Husk |
Specified for husk applications |
Both mismatches are real and common:
‑ Type A on abrasive feedstock — lifespan collapses from 400–600 hours to 200–400 hours. Type B should have been specified.
‑ Type B on soft feedstock — reduced output. The higher wear‑resistance steel carries less impact mass, so soft material takes longer to reduce.
Blade wear life
Type A blades run 400–600 operating hours on softwood, sawdust or pine. The hammer mill screen running behind them has a comparable life (400–600 hours), so blade and screen replacement usually fall in the same maintenance window.
How many blades your mill takes
Kingwood FSP series hammer mills carry a full blade set sized to the model:
| Model |
Blades |
Throughput |
| FSP‑80T |
84 |
1–2 t/h |
| FSP‑100T |
108 |
2–3 t/h |
| FSP‑120T |
132 |
3–5 t/h |
| FSP‑140T |
144 |
5–8 t/h |
Blades replace as a coordinated set. Replacing individual blades leaves the rotor out of balance, which damages bearings long before the remaining blades wear out.
Replacing blades
Blade replacement is a routine field operation needing no specialised tooling beyond standard wrenches. Trained operators change a full set in 2–4 hours of scheduled downtime. Kingwood operator training covers blade replacement as a standard maintenance skill.
