The ring die needs to withstand impact, alternating load and friction, so the ring die must have sufficient strength, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. The three properties interact and restrict each other. For example, the hardness of the ring die will increase its wear resistance, but it will lack toughness and crack easily under the great impact force.
Carbon structural steel. A kind of carbon steel, the carbon content is about 0.05%~0.70%. For example, the common 45 steel has a heat treatment hardness of HRC45~50, which is low in price and is used for places where performance requirements are not very high. Improvements in die performance requirements are now largely not used as ring die materials.
Alloy structural steel. Common alloy structural steel grades are: 20CrMnTi, 40Cr, 35CrMo, etc., heat treatment hardness can reach above NHRC50, with excellent comprehensive mechanical properties. The ring die made of this material can further enhance the surface hardness of the ring die to improve the wear resistance after the carburizing process, but the disadvantage is that the corrosion resistance is poor. When the surface hardened layer of the ring die is corroded and destroyed, the ring die is sharply accelerated service life of the ring die.
Stainless steel ring die. Stainless steel ring die is also called chrome ring die, the material is 3Cr13, 4Cr13, etc. These materials have good strength and impact resistance. The heat treatment hardness is greater than HRC50. Generally, the ring die made by hardening or vacuum hardening contains 0.4% carbon. ~0.5%, chromium 12%~14%. Compared with the alloy structure steel ring die, the corrosion resistance is greatly improved, but the wear resistance and toughness are slightly worse, and the hardness inside and outside the ring die is relatively uniform.
Carburized stainless steel ring die. After being carburized, the stainless steel ring die has the same hardened surface as the alloy steel ring die, and the wear resistance is greatly improved. The hardness gradually decreases from the outside to the inside, and has good impact resistance. As the carbon content in the material increases after carburizing, the probability of intergranular formation of chromium and carbon in the stainless steel increases, resulting in poor corrosion resistance compared to stainless steel.
